Irate Villagers Burn KK Vehicles Over Elephant Incident

Two vehicles belonging to African Parks stationed at the Nkhotakota Game Reserve have been set ablaze by an angry mob after an elephant suspected to have escaped from the park killed a woman in the district.

Police have confirmed that officials that were deployed to manage the marauding elephant were assaulted by irate villagers who also set the vehicles ablaze.

The incident occurred on Friday, at Bamba village in the area of Sub Traditional Authority (STA) Nkhanga in the district.

Confirming the development, Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sub-Inspector Williams Kaponda said the deceased met her fate when she was farming with her husband in their farm which is metres away from the Reserve.

“When police and and Nkhotakota Game Reserve officials rushed to the site, angry villagers started beating the officials injuring two officers and later burnt two vehicles belonging to African Parks,” he said.

The deceased Sabitha Banda, 21, hailed from Nambamba village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Chakhadza in Dowa district.
