Some Zomba citizens have protested the delays in delivering on the Lirangwe-Chingale-Machinga road almost 13 years after the project was scheduled to start.
The concerned stakeholders have since delivered a petition to Parliament asking government to construct the road.
According to one of the concerned concerned citizens, Francis Gondwa, the matter is long overdue.
He said this has affected their way of life as it is hard to do businesses and access health services because cars can not easily pass through the road.
“Every time we see contractors starting to work on the road, they don’t finish the work, they disappear without explanation. And when we ask the authorities where the funds for the construction of the road go, there are no answers either. So we want answers from Parliament and that the construction of the road should be done, ” explained Gondwa.
On his part, Programs Manager for Center for Social Concern (CFSC), Bernard Mphepo, said it is sad that the road is not being constructed for 13 years.
Mphepo observed that the road is now being used as a tool to woo voters during campaign period.
He added that it is high time concerned authorities started separating politics from development.
“Poverty levels in Chingale are very high because there is no good road and this is very sad because these people are denied all rights entitled to them that way. We expect that the petition is answered so that the road can be constructed, ” he said.
Receiving the petition, Yeremia Chihana who is Mzimba North MP said he will take the petition to the office of the speaker so that it should be tabled in Parliament on Thursday.
